Tikondane was started as a literacy program for adults and has flourished. It now includes literacy classes in both English and the local language Chewa, as well all preparation for exams up to GCE level. It is programs such as these that give adults who did not have an opportunity as children the opportunity to complete their education and obtain the general school certificates.

Learning

Every volunteer or worker arriving in TIKO agrees to participate in some kind of educational development or to pass on their skills in the form of training.

Classes are held on five afternoons each week and the teachers either come from TIKO itself or are hired from a local school on a part time basis.

The classes for TIKO workers are also open to anyone within the Katete District who wishes to join the programme. Such participants are required to pay a small fee to cover the expense of the resources used and the teachers' salaries and to express commitment.  The literacy classes remain free.

Below is the breakdown of a typical programme for a year:

Classroom

  • Chewa Literacy Levels 1&2: one hour twice a week
  • English Literacy Levels 1&2: one hour twice a week
  • Grade 6 and Grade 8: two full afternoons a week. Subjects: English, Maths, Social Studies, Environmental Science, Zambian Language
  • Grade 9 Certificate: preparation on three full afternoons a week. Subjects: English, Math, Geography, History, Religious Studies, Science
  • GCE certificate:  preparation on three full afternoons a week. Subjects: Maths, English, Physics, Biology, Chemistry.

These classes provide a second chance for many who for social or economic reasons were previously unable to follow a full programme of education.

This opportunity is particularly important for girls and women who are still often neglected when it comes to schooling. This is the result of the attitudes concerning gender which still prevail in this part of the world.

TIKO also offers lessons in Chewa to foreign visitors for a minimal fee
