The animals

Picture of the animals

The animal husbandry section of Tikondane started with one mud hut and a chicken, but hasn't stopped growing since!

Now when taking a walk through the maze of fur and fences you are likely to spot anything from ducks to rabbits, with a few goats thrown in for good measure.

We first expanded to include goats as a way of feeding many people in a short time, always useful when you have a party; something Tikondane understands all too well with its regular volunteer and staff appreciation celebrations! One goat is estimated to feed almost 70 people and with a crew as large as this one, goats prove invaluable.

TIKO is now trying to start new model kraals (pens) for pigeons, rabbits and dairy goats. Sadly, these require solid investment, as termites are one of the most common inhabitants of Katete soil.

The garden has always been one of the highlights at Tikondane and remains stunning both aesthetically and gastronomically!

We started by planting the African staples of tomatoes, rape and onions, but have since learned to accommodate to more diverse taste buds!

With tender loving care we now proudly cultivate avocadoes, beetroot, pumpkin, spring onions, green beans, green peppers, carrots, broccoli, spinach, strawberries and aubergines (eggplant).

The orchard is our newest addition (2001) and supplies the crew and community with such treats as fresh lemons, pineapples, oranges, mangoes, bananas, peaches, papayas and pomegranates!

Whether for a stress-relieving stroll or a taste-bud treat, the TIKO garden promises not to disappoint.
