Katete

Katete

The most spectacular attraction in the area is truly Tikondane itself. However, the gorgeous backdrop of the Mphangwe mountains & genuinely African setting of Katete, create the opportunity for a number of cultural safaris during your visit.

  • Charming walks throughout the beautiful scenery of the area.
  • Experience the pleasant atmosphere of the local markets & stores of the nearby Katete township.
  • Visit the pioneering St Francis Mission Hospital, to learn what is being done to overcome the health problems of Africa.
  • Take an evening walk to a Chewa village to watch dancing, including the men's "Great Dance" of the village spirits to powerful drum music. You will also enjoy a delicious meal with fresh local fish.
  • Receive a personal invitation to the palace of the local chief, to learn of the important role tribal life plays in Africa.
  • Visit the Cathedral at Msoro, the Anglican "Cathedral in the Middle of Nowhere", where the first missionaries came from Malawi.
  • With at least 4 week's notice, there is also the possibility of organising an extensive Zulu celebration with many neighboring villages participating in a full day's festivities
Chipata

As the capital of the Eastern Province, Chipata (80km away) is a popular jumping-off point for heading to South LuangwaNational Park and crossing the border into Malawi (30 km further East). It's a vibrant, but friendly town that has all of the basic amenities a traveller is looking for. All of the larger banks have offices there. You'll have no problem finding accommodation, no matter your price range, keeping in mind that Zambia is a relatively expensive country by African standards (approx. $10 US for a dorm room in a hostel). There are plenty of places to access the internet, but one of the most popular can be found near the Post Office. Chipata can be easily reached from Katete via bus or taxi. The buses have a very erratic schedule and minibuses drivers wait until the car is full! The local bus station in Katete is conveniently located along the Great East Road directly in front of the market.
