United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

  1. To eradicate extreme poverty & hungerclass
  2. to achieve universal primary education
  3. to promote gender equality and empower women
  4. to considerably reduce infant mortality rates
  5. to drastically improve maternal health ratios
  6. to combat HIV/AIDS and other major diseases
  7. to achieve environmental sustainability
  8. to develop a global partnership for development

All 191 UN member states have pledged to meet these goals by the year 2015.

The basis of Tikondane as a community education and empowerment initiative is in complete agreement with the Millennium Goals set out by the United Nations. Not only has TIKO recognized the need for awareness, change and sustainability, but it has spent over a decade working towards viable solutions together with the people concerned. Zambia has consistently produced disheartening statistics concerning maternal and infant mortality rates and suffers from one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS infection on the continent. By first consolidating the main objectives of our Village Outreach Programme we can then expand to realize the vision of smaller scale TIKO copies in each of our neighbouring villages. These community centres would provide a realistic opportunity for universal primary education and be equipped with solar lighting for adult classes at night. There would also be extensive training on the nutrition-sanitation-disease connection, with the promotion of pit latrines and irrigated gardens to not only support those infected, but to prevent the disease from spreading. The key is to not only achieve these goals, but also to sustain them.
